Yes, it was the starter. Boy, do I feel dumb! Especially since I had considered that, and someone else suggested it at the time. I feel dumb becuase the fix was so easy, but instead I had to go home (20 miles each way) and get the trailer and carry the car home.

At the time, I tried push starting it in 2nd (and 3rd). And then (in case it was the starter) I even tried to push-start it in REVERSE. I even beat on the starter with a hammer.

Last night, I simply put it in 3rd and pushed the car backwards for a second and CLUNK! Problem fixed!

In retrospect, I now realize that push-starting in reverse does NOT turn the motor backwards. (insert "bang head on wall smiley" here).

Easy way to push the car I found is to simply grab the top of the tire and roll it.
