Sometimes steering arms get bent and allow the tie rod to rub one or the other the wishbone radius rods while turning, usually the right side. See if the tie rod has a "flat" section on its underside, as well as the top of both radius rods. You might not see this condition while checking out front end parts with the car jacked up. But once the weight of the chassis bears down on the front end - teamed up with bumps in the road - the tie rod can come into contact with a radius rod, producing a "clunk". If you find this condition, you'll need to find which steering arm has drooped and either bend it up again or replace it. If no wear spots are found, one of the other responders may be correct that a steering arm ball is worn eggshaped, creating slack in a tie rod or drag link end. But usually if the steering end plug is not tight against a worn steering ball, you'll also experience shimmying. Marshall |
