...car in gear to unjam a starter drive, do not use the clutch! That defeats the whole purpose in rocking the car. You let the transmission and rear end gears do the work. If you pop the clutch while you are rocking the car, there won't be any rotation of the flywheel to free the drive. Just put the transmission in gear, make sure the ignition key is off and the parking brake is released, and then go around to the back of the car. Put your back against the spare tire carrier (if you have one) or the rear section and push with all your might, allowing your legs to provide the power. Do this is rocking motions to get a rhythm going: push, relax, push, relax, etc. Eventually the wheels will turn and force the flywheel to move just enough to free the starter drive. That will do it in about 95% of the cases of a stuck starter drive. The remaining 5% requires removal of the starter and usually a BFH to knock the starter loose. Try to avoid removing the starter for this reason, as well as all of the electrical connections that must be undone, especially with your solenoid set-up. Marshall |
