The squeal is really very high speed chatter. That fact is not really important, but the result is still annoying. What I have done for years is to run a bead of your favorite goop, silicone, urethane, butyl,RTV,down the backside of the shoe.Wash it good first, brakleen, alcohol, thinner. It seems to absorb the minute chatter.I have done it on 16 by 7 truck brakes for years and works pretty good.Once in a while I will get a truck brake that will still squeal but usually after the brake has been applied for a little while.A brake rep told me it was because the goop on the back could only absorb so much, and after that the noise breaks loose.I had a man with a 31 that spent a gazillion dollars on his brakes,He had tried bonded, riveted, molded, bonded and riveted together. Then new cast drums. He asked me to have a look,he was not expecting much. The fellow that had worked on it had done neat, clean work.I used about a tube of orange RTV on all 8 of his shoes. When he came back from a test ride I could hear him swearing all the way up the lane.I thought, well that didn't work.Turns out he was swearing at the fact that he had gone through 24 brake shoes trying to get rid of a noise, and I had fixed it with a tube of goop. |
