...you'll see that one side of the opening is now worn at an angle. It used to be parallel with the opposite side, forming a nice squared-off opening. But years of use and pressure against the end collar stop piece have worn away this part of the pedal, allowing it to move backwards. The collar is most likely also worn in the corresponding point of contact. To correct, you can do as suggested by welding the clutch pedal opening worn side and grinding, or do the same to the end shaft collar and overcompensating for wear at the pedal opening. Just putting on a new collar will only partially solve the problem. The real culprit is the clutch pedal opening itself. That the floorboards shove the pedal to an almost even position with the brake pedal tells me this is the case. Keeping it this way, though, will result in a sharp rap against the floorboard every time the clutch pedal is released. Not good, and very irritating. There should be a little clearance between the clutch pedal arm and the floorboards. It's a trial and error process, welding and filing/grinding until both pedals line up in the full rearward position. You'd be surprised how many "restored" Model A's have pedals sitting at markedly different heights for lack of correcting an otherwise simple worn part. 'Always makes me wonder what else the rebuilder missed. Marshall |
