Thanks Chris for your reply,I almost overlooked it. Unless you have Xray vision you can't see the bearings and counter shafts with the top off the transmission. The gears and case may well last a lifetime but not so with the bearings and shafts. Its just good common sense to replace these parts while they are easy to get to. When the bearings come apart, the result is catastrofic transmission failure, usualy including a cracked case.

I looked at Brattons catalog and a rebuilt transmission sells for $900.00 exchange. You must at least have a good case or the exchange will be unacceptable. A bearing, counter shaft and gasket set rebuild will only cost around $60.00. The math is elementary. With old bearings nobody can predict when it will happen, but its not good when it does.

I know, I know, Some will have lots of extra parts, maybe an extra transmission or two. People that are new to the model A world usually don't know what to expect with an 80 year old automobile. I won't try to guess how many miles that I have driven in model A's but I have had one or more running since 1960. In the past 50 years I have had several transmission failures, without warning because of bearing failure. When I was young, used transmissions could be found for ten or twenty bucks, not so today. I really don't care what you do with yours, I will rebuild mine. How many older guys do you think would enjoy pulling the backend and crawling under the model A and muscleing with a transmission???

Crankshaft and flywheel. As far as having to have a counter-weighted crankshaft to run a model B or lightened flywheel is bull hockey. I have ran model B flywheels for years with great results with stock model A crankshafts. I also think that its worth mentioning that I have seen a few destroyed engines as a result of someones botch up job of installing counterweights. Adding weight to the crankshaft will take away the benefit of a lightened flywheel. I know that several will disagree.

I agree, floating motor mounts are junk, I dont use them but I see that a lot of people do. I only mentioned them because a person doesn't need a frame spreader if they have them.

Ok Chris, there is MY not so humble opinion. Its allways good talking model A.
