In Cow Hampshire, no vehicle is sold without a title. Thus you have to have the current documents. For vehicles over 10 years old, you can apply for a title with your local town. Provide the town clerk enough evidence (often simply a bill of sale providing information where to locate the seller for confirmation) and they'll give you an application for title. This is then properly filled out (which is basically a re-hash of the same information given the town clerk) and sent in to the state with the appropriate check. Shortly later you'll get the title in the mail. On sale, the transfer requires VID verification by local constabulary (who produces an affidavit) and stamped by a Notary Public (using the affidavit as proof). Depending on who you get for verification this could either be a "yup" or "is that a 5 or is it an S?" In my case both the engine and frame numbers matched. They used the frame numbers since "motors can be changed." And my buyer was from Texas which apparently has more stringient title laws. My buyer was glad that I could provide a title. The 10 year bypass mentioned earlier might open the process up if you know someone in Cow Hampshire who could "sell" you your car after having gone this route via their town clerk. Once title is established, it's a lot easier in most states to have it transferred/re-issued. Titles, however they're secured/sold outside of Cow Hampshire, seem to go for around $100. Joe
