My observations: My car runs cooler with them. They help direct the air over the exhaust manifold, which is a real high heat source that needs lots of air. If you feel the air flow coming from the hood louvers while the engine is runnng, you will find that most of the air exits the right side due to the fan rotation. Without pans this flow will be reduced as the air flow will want to disipate all over the place. I am of the opinion, though, that the pans also help transmit engine vibration. I don't especially like that aspect as I'm very badly affected by vibrating machinery. All else aside, I think the pans are beneficial and the the good points out weigh the bad. I'll keep them on mine.
