I have one of Snyders Fan removal tools and it works good. You remove the nut that holds the fan and the tool will bottom on the water pump shaft before it touches the fan. I grasp the fan by the pulley with one hand dnd strike the removal tool with a hammer. You don't have to hit it that hard, just a quick reasonable tap. Like Jim states below,the tool works like the hub removal knocker tool.
