This is a very common way to break items loose from a tapered shaft. Often pieces of hard wood, brass drifts, etc. will work. Kinda like the rear drum puller. Screw the tool onto the shaft and hit with a hammer. The jarring of the shaft will break it loose. It works very well and doesn't damage anything on the part.
