Sounds like it takes two people. One person to hold pressure on the blade outward, and a second person to hit that nut, jarring the shaft and allowing the fan to pop free. I would make the assumption that you are not doing the pump any good however, especially if the unknowledgable person starts beating the nut thinking something will happen.
