If there was something hinky in the starter, you would have seen it when you hooked up the neg cable from the starter to the battery in the first place. The starter draws power directly and does not go through the ammeter.

Check for shorts in the attachment of the terminal box to the firewall as well as wires touching inside the terminal box itself....notorious area.
