Did you check to see if the starter would turn the engine after all the other work that you preformed? The chances are pretty good that the starter drive is hung up and this was the main problem to start with. Try turning the engine with the hand crank, if it won't turn, the starter drive is hung up on the flywheel. If this is the case you can put the car in high gear and rock the car back and forth until you hear a click and it will be un stuck. The spark that you are seeing when you connect the battery cable could be caused by the brake light switch or the points could be stuck in the cut out.
