How do I remove the light switch...It's too long!

Hi,

I am now repairing a broken steering wheel and need to remove it from the shaft. I removed the clip that holds the spider in the steering tube, but when I try to withdraw the light switch and rod, the assembly hits the ceiling of the coupe! The switch and rod are too long to come out. It would be easy if I had a roadster! How do I remove the switch and rod!!!!
