I think part of the fun and challenge of the Model A is being the engine controller. I'm always fiddling with the spark, mixture, and throttle settings while underway to get the best "sound and feel." That includes downshifting when going around a corner or getting ready to pull up a hill (lots around this part of PA), which as others have said is all about practice and learning that sound and feel. I think its pretty satisfying to hit that shift point with no grinding, but it doesn't happen all the time...
