It will take practice. You have to develope a feel for it. Engine and wheel speed needs to be the same for a smooth shift, up or down. Depress the clutch and move the shift to the neutral position, with one foot on the throttle increase engine speed slightly. With your hand on the shift lever head it toward second gear not enough to grind gears, but enough to feel the gears and when the speed of the engine and wheels equalize it will slip into second gear. Don't rev it way up or it still won't go. Keep in mind that you are trying to syncronize engine and wheel speed. With enough practice it will come natural. It is seldom that you will need to down shift. Keep your momentum up when you approach hills,Lugging in high gear is very bad for the babbit and just about everything else. Don't give up, practice makes better, sometimes we all scrape the gears.
