don't worry until you are below 20 mph in 3rd (assuming standard 3:78 differential). the technique you described is correct. just takes practice. be patient, be gentle and you will get the hang of it. talked to a guy recently who bought a Mitchell synchro transmission for his A because he couldn't downshift. learning to downshift is a lot cheaper and great fun once you get the hang of it.......
